Tour guides for the day!

Quokka Coaches (Rottnest Fast Ferries sister company), in partnership with Beaconsfield School, organised an unforgettable and educational tour of Rottnest Island, designed to give students a hands-on opportunity to develop important life skills. What made this tour particularly unique was the fact that the students themselves took on the role of the tour guides. They provided insightful commentary as they led the group around various key landmarks, showcasing their knowledge of the island's rich history, natural beauty, and diverse wildlife.

This experience went far beyond a simple field trip. By stepping into the role of tour guides, the students were challenged to enhance their communication, leadership, and teamwork skills. It provided them with a platform to build self-confidence in a real-world setting, while also learning to engage an audience and deliver information clearly and effectively. These skills are not only valuable in an academic context but are also essential in shaping well-rounded individuals who are prepared for future challenges.

David Forrest, the Rottnest Operations Manager for Quokka Coaches and brain behind the idea, has always been inspired to give back to communities. He states:

“In any senior role I’ve been in across my career I have always prioritised community outreach, this has primarily been with local primary schools with a focus on charity fundraising, educational purposes, or both at the same time if the shoe fits.”

Additionally, the tour served a greater purpose as it was organised to raise funds for Telethon, a charity close to the students' hearts. Telethon supports children's health initiatives, and by using their newfound skills to benefit this cause, the students were able to contribute to something meaningful within the broader community. Forrest acknowledges the success of the event stating;

“I felt very proud and thankful it all went off without a hitch, it was a real team effort.” The event resulted in $1500 being raised for Telethon and the kids got to present the comically large cheque live on the TV broadcast, an experience sure to stick with them.

The success of this event reflects the spirit of collaboration and community involvement that defines Rottnest Island. Forrest has also experienced a newfound popularity among the students, explaining “I can’t drive/walk past the kids now without them shouting hello to me and also Glenn [driver on the day]” It brought together local businesses, schools, and individuals for a common cause, emphasising the island's role as not just a tourist destination, but a place where community bonds are strengthened. In this way, the tour underscored how education, charity, and community engagement can come together to create enriching experiences that have a lasting impact on all involved.
